The larger bikes have a masculine appeal and allow a man to give expression to his manliness. Bikes are thus the ingredients of the gangs that roam the countryside. Some of these gangs no doubt indulge in criminal activities. These include extortion and even murder.

But not all bikes gangs indulge only in criminal activities as a good many of these gang members are law abiding citizens, who go for rallies and cross country drives. Most of the bike gangs emerged after the end of the Second World War. Some of them have international chapters as well.
Women and Bike Gangs

Though no exclusive women bike gangs are seen or heard of, yet a good many women and girls do become part of such gangs. Right from the time of the ancient armies and the macho warriors of yore, women have been an appendage for pleasure and exhibition along with the main warriors. The ancient Roman gladiators were given choice women for sexual gratification after a deathly duel. Even the mighty Timur the Mongol warrior who razed the city of Delhi to the ground had an appendage of lovely women which added to his masculine image. Much the same way the women who are part of the bike gangs serve as an adornment and pamper the macho image of the rider.

 Girls serve to enhance the macho effect of the gangs. Women join these gangs like Hells angels or similar groups for a variety of reasons. The motivating factor is different for different women. Some women join for the thrill and excitement that a gang provides. Others may join as they are homeless and have no place to stay. For such women a degree of security is provided when they join the gang. For others they may have no option, as after a rape by the gang members they are abducted and forced to be with the gangs. But a majority of women join the gangs of their own free will. Women who join these gangs accept all activities of the club and participate in all group activities of the bike gang. Some like it, as it gives them an outlet for their repressed desires and needs. Sex is the common thread for these women bikers. If a woman is lucky she could attach herself to the gang leader. In that case she would become his property and no other gang member would touch her. But a lot of women end up as common property for all bikers. Repeated sex with the gang members is then the norm.
 Reasons for Women as gang member
The types of women who become members of such gangs are generally without much education as it gives them an expression or outlet for their rebelliousness to society at large. It gives them a chance to get recognition with the gang. Again women who join these gangs are generally emotionally unstable and are craving for love. Some girls feel secure with the gang and some confuse sex and affection with the gang members as a fulfillment of their urge to be loved.
The Present 
Over the passage of time the role of women in the motorcycle gangs has undergone a change. Earlier the girls were simply there to enhance the macho effect of the biker .Sex was the main factor. But now with the criminal activities of these gangs on the increase the role of women also concerns earning money for the gang. They could be used as decoys, for prostitution as well as drug carriers. The list is endless but women alone cannot run a bike gang by themselves. They will remain an appendage. But they do add to the Macho effect of the members of the bike gangs.
